We heard last night that tropical storm Kalmaegi was upgraded to typhoon and would hit during the night. All I know is that our windows rattled like they were going to blow-in all night, and are still rattling. It's almost 9am now, and our boss just called to say that the government just announced all schools are closed today because of the typhoon, so our school will be closed, too. Yipee! A three day weekend! Typhoons are pretty dangerous here for coastal cities, and Chunghua is on the west coast. The typhoon is currently heading west across Taiwan towards China and is expected to reach us in a few hours. We don't know of any damage yet, but some news is pretty delayed here. I looked out the window just now and saw that it's raining sideways - the wind is blowing so hard. Don't worry though, the building we live in is pretty sturdy. I think the danger would be mostly for those living right on the beach (tidal waves) and for us, getting hit by flying debris. But we aren't gonna go out in this, so no worries. I'll keep you posted if anything more 'thrilling' than this happens. By the way, my room is on the second floor so the water would have to get pretty high to reach me - that won't happen. Chunghua is not New Orleans and these typhoons are a regular occurance here.
*update* Friday, July 18, 2008, 1:30pm: Looks like the south of Taiwan got it bad last night and today. Those poor people! But it could have been so much worse (more dead) like it was in 2001 here with typhoon Toragi. Over 100 people died in that one. We are OK in Chunghua. Just a lot of rain and high winds.

I'm glad to hear you are safe! You never know on those islands. Are you still enjoying it there? It sounds like a new adventure! And yes, your face does look like it's made of wax :) We miss you and keep you in our prayers; keep posting! All our love...
